# Why your Google reviews are not showing (and what to do)

> Google checks reviews before they appear, which can take a few days. Reviews that go missing were usually removed for breaking policy, and those are not restored.

Google reviews usually go missing for a short list of reasons, and Google spells most of them out itself. The review is still being checked, it broke a policy and was removed, posting has been switched off for that place or category, or the profile has a problem of its own. Which one applies decides what you can do, so it's worth working out which it is before you panic.

## The short list of reasons Google gives

Google's own help pages are pretty plain about this. Here's what they say, and then the rest of this guide takes each situation in turn.

Reviews are checked to make sure they comply with Google's policies, and that can take a few days, which can delay a review appearing on the profile. When a review is removed, it's usually for a policy violation like spam or inappropriate content. Merged profiles can cause a delay too: if you recently merged Business Profiles, it might take a few days for reviews from both profiles to show on Search and Maps.

Then there are the category and location rules. Google might temporarily disable user-created content, including reviews, for certain Business Profiles or business categories. Reviews are also only available in certain countries or regions and for certain business categories, and that can change over time. And if your profile is primarily categorised as an educational institution for students aged 6 to 18, reviews and ratings are removed and disabled. Universities, day care centres and swim schools are excluded from that.

Last, the profile itself. If a profile breaks Google's guidelines it's disabled or suspended, and it won't show to other users until the problem is resolved. You'd get a notification in the Google Account that manages it.

That's the list.

## If a new review has not appeared yet

Give it a few days. Google checks reviews against its policies before they show, and that check can take a few days.

While you wait, there are a couple of things worth checking. Did you recently merge profiles? If so, reviews from both profiles might take a few days to show on Search and Maps, so the review may simply be in transit.

Are you looking in the right place? To see your profile as the owner, you have to be signed in to the Google Account associated with it. Search "my business" or your business name and city on Google Search, or in the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right. If you're signed in to a different account, you won't be seeing your profile as its owner.

If the review still hasn't shown after a few days, move on to the next section, because it may have been removed rather than delayed.

## If reviews have disappeared from your profile

This is the one that stings. A review was there, now it isn't.

Usually, reviews are removed for policy violations like spam or inappropriate content. Google uses a combination of people and machine-learning algorithms to spot content that breaks its policies: it's either removed by automated models or flagged for review by trained operators. Google generally removes a full post even if only one part violates, so a photo post with a text review attached can go in its entirety.

Posts also have to be based on real experiences. That's part of the policy.

Reviews removed for policy violations will not be restored. Google doesn't reinstate them, so it's better to know that now than to wait for one to come back.

There are a few other causes worth ruling out. If your profile was suspended and then reinstated, reviews might be removed after the reinstatement. If that happens, Google says to contact its support team. Also check your category: if it counts as a school for students aged 6 to 18, reviews and ratings are removed and disabled, and if that category doesn't represent your business you can change it.

Then there's the restriction side. If a business owner has broken Google's Fake Engagement policy, Google may restrict the profile. That can mean no new reviews for a set period, existing reviews unpublished for a set period, and a warning shown to customers that fake reviews were removed. Businesses can appeal. Offering incentives, meaning free or discounted goods or services, for posting, changing or removing reviews counts as fake engagement and is strictly prohibited. The guide on [asking for Google reviews within the rules](/guides/asking-for-google-reviews-rules/) covers what's allowed.

Lastly, posting can be paused. In the short term, Google may turn it off for a place for a brief period to protect it from a spike of irrelevant or offensive content, say a real-world event drawing off-topic commentary. It's lifted when the risk dies down. In the long term, it may be off where a category or area has a continuous pattern of low-value or off-topic posts. Police stations, prisons, schools and children's homes are the examples Google gives.

## If a customer says their review is not showing

Right, this is the question that lands in your inbox or gets said at the counter. What can they do?

First, they need to be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review. They can set one up with a non-Gmail email address, so not having Gmail isn't a barrier. All reviews are public, and there's no anonymous option.

Second, they can find the reviews they've written. On a computer, they go to Google Maps, then Menu, then Your contributions, then Reviews. In the Android or iPhone app, it's Contribute, then View your profile, then See all reviews. That's the first place to look.

Third, if it was taken down, the same rules apply as above. A review removed for a policy violation won't be reinstated, and Google generally removes the whole post even if only one part broke the rules. If they want to change or remove a review they wrote, point them to the guide on [editing or deleting a Google review you wrote](/guides/edit-or-delete-a-google-review-you-wrote/). If you want to hand them a direct link to your review box, [finding your Google review link](/guides/find-your-google-review-link/) covers it.

There's also the older-phone problem. Customers using older phones or software might have trouble leaving reviews, and Google recommends they update their Maps app to the latest version. Simple, and easy to miss.

## If you cannot see reviews on your phone

Google's guidance here is short. The phone-related point it makes is about the Maps app being out of date: if a customer has trouble leaving a review on an older phone or older software, updating the Maps app to the latest version is the recommended step.

It's also worth going back to the basics. In the Maps app, Business at the bottom right is where you see your profile as the owner, and only while signed in to the right account. If the profile has been disabled or suspended, other users won't see it at all until it's resolved, and the notification goes to the managing Google Account, so check there.

## What not to do

Don't offer a discount, a freebie or anything else in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review. Google classes that as fake engagement and strictly prohibits it, and the consequences can include no new reviews, unpublished reviews and a public warning on your profile.

Don't assume a removed review will come back. Reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored, so waiting around for one is wasted effort.

Don't post reviews that aren't based on real experiences, or ask others to. That's the heart of the content policy.

And don't go hunting for a workaround to something Google has turned off on purpose. If posting is paused for your category or area, or reviews are disabled for a school category, that's a deliberate restriction. If you believe a review on your profile breaks the rules, you can report it: see [how to report and remove a fake Google review](/guides/remove-fake-google-review/). Replying properly to the ones that are showing is covered in [how to reply to Google reviews](/guides/how-to-reply-to-google-reviews/).

The steady fix for a thin review count is the honest one: ask every customer. The [review request builder](/tools/review-request-generator/) and the [Google review QR card maker](/tools/google-review-qr-code/) make that quicker.

## Questions people ask

### How long does a new Google review take to appear?

Google checks reviews against its policies before they show, and it says this can take a few days. If you recently merged two Business Profiles, reviews from both can also take a few days to appear on Search and Maps. Google doesn't give a more precise timing than that.

### Will Google put a removed review back?

Not if it was removed for a policy violation. Google says reviews removed for breaking its policies won't be restored. The one exception it mentions is reviews that disappear after a suspended profile is reinstated: in that case, Google says to contact its support team.

### Can a customer leave a Google review anonymously?

No. Google says all reviews are public and you can't add an anonymous review. Others can see the reviewer's name from their About me page. The customer also needs to be signed in to a Google Account, though that account can be set up with a non-Gmail email address.

### Why can't I leave reviews on my business at all?

Google may switch reviews off for a place, for a short spell after a spike of off-topic posts or long term for some categories, such as schools. Reviews are also only available in certain countries, regions and business categories. If a Fake Engagement restriction applies, new reviews can be blocked for a set period.
